Nonetheless Pogačar impressed a comeback and decided chase after which surged previous final attacker Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) on the ultimate time up the Oude Kwaremont.
The Slovenian time trialed to the end, extending his lead right into a headwind.
Van der Poel chased with all his coronary heart and held on to complete 17 seconds down on Pogačar. Pedersen edged out Van Aert to win the dash for third place from the group of survivors from the assault.
