The opening stage takes place round Chambon-sur-Lac, a commune that sits within the shadow of the sprawling Parc naturel régional des Volcans d’Auvergne – an space of 80 dormant volcanoes – considered one of which, the Puy-de-Dôme, provides the division its title.
