A Poem by Kathy Fagan: ‘The Mild in Autumn’

Somebody was weeping,
wailing actually; it was laborious
to know who as a result of we wore masks
in these days—

maybe we do nonetheless.
The sunshine exterior was, as they are saying,
autumnal, as lavish and unforgiving
as god. The wailer

didn’t cease, and ultimately,
as a result of nobody will get in or out
of Kroger quick, we tracked him,
a bagger, bawling

like a toddler, a few of us
asking one another if he was
okay, figuring out and listening to,
after all, he wasn’t.

And although we might have
pitied him, we didn’t
go to him, he whose cry
was each performative

and cathartic. It will be
correct to say that I personally
envied him slightly
and admired him loads,

however wouldn’t have
traded locations. I bagged my very own
groceries on the self-check
and received the hell out,

the keening lastly behind me,
although I couldn’t cease
listening to it. Leaves flipped
us off with their golden

fingers, the clouds held again
a darkness—you would inform—
whereas the solar, nicely,
the solar was so sturdy,

I didn’t even need to
look that showboat straight
within the eyes for my eyes
to fill with tears.
